Our Mission Statement
The Purple & Gray News, created November 19th, 2009, is committed to the craft of writing. The Purple & Gray News is a publication that pays homage to the glory of newspapers from a bygone era, glossy magazines and Internet based news sites. We, the staff of the Purple & Gray News, will cover a variety of topics. We will present our news and social commentary in many ways: as unadorned reportage, as
narrative non-fiction, in essay form and even as whimsical fiction.
We will reflect on current events and act as a digest.
We know that to deliver the news is to tint it with a bias, regardless of how objective we would strive to be. Therefore we will attempt to be as transparently biased as possible, making light of our own processes and ethos.
This mission statement is the first attempt at transparency.
In an age when almost anyone can start a blog or website to offer opinions or deliver a story, we have decided that the privilege of being a print journalist belongs to those who put forth the effort to maintain factual integrity and follow
self-prescribed guidelines that others can count on such as rigorous editing,
a passion for writing and in-depth fact checking.
We love what we do and are proud to do it well.
Oh, and why Purple and why Gray?
Two divorced, and some might say opposed styles of writing, “purple prose” and the objective, reliable literature found in the “gray lady” - a nickname for the New York Times - joins hands with no pretenses and no holds barred.
